Nothing else matters if we can’t keep our kids safe
By: Jessica Baghian
I had planned to use this space this week to write about cell phone bans in schools, which is one the buzziest back-to-school topics of the year. That was before I saw screenshots of texts between children cowering in their classrooms and terrified parents powerless to help them.
The educational details we all care about are so deeply important. And yet nothing else matters if we can’t keep our kids safe. My heart breaks for the victims and their families in Georgia, for our country, and for all of our children. Hug your kids extra tight, and refuse to accept that we have to live like this.
As Americans, we have never shied away from solving big daunting challenges when we care enough to do it. We stopped the march of fascism across Europe. We put a man on the moon. We can stop this madness, but we have to have the courage to take action. We have to keep trying to fix it, even when it’s hard.
