The Delta Issue #5
The rose, bud, thorn issue🌹
By: Jessica Baghian
Hi friends, @Jessica here. Isn’t it great to be back on a schedule now that the kids are back in school? We’re taking a brief break from our regular deep dives on the issues for a pulse-check from the audience: Do you have a rose, bud, or thorn to share this fall?
I’ll go first:
🌹 The thing I’m loving: Our school has my oldest kids fill out a planner every day. I’m excited to see my kids building the discipline of keeping track of their work and obligations from a young age. And I’m excited for Cameron, my youngest, to be in an early childhood classroom environment that’s rich in language with supportive educators.
🌱 The thing I’m looking forward to: Our school is doing tons of screeners at the beginning of the year, and while tracking outcomes is good, it’s also a reminder that we have work to do to slim down how we test, why we test, and how we use it. Still, I’m looking forward to seeing the data on their progress. In math, I’ll be looking to see if they are getting enough practice with both fluency and problem solving. In ELA, I want to see Charlie really lock down his decoding skills and Cyrus build his vocabulary and grow his knowledge of the world by reading increasingly complex texts.
🩸 The thing that’s bugging me: My son Cyrus (who wants to be an exterminator when he grows up) is eating school lunch. Now I just need Charlie (who wants to be a blacksmith) to do the same!
